Building in SL

Page history last edited by Anonymous 12 years, 5 months ago

This section of the workshop will take place almost entirely in-world. However, you can find some links to images and videos on basic building techniques in Second Life below.

These images (slideshow above the videos) and videos take you through the basic steps of building, and working with building tools, in Second Life. We will practice many of these elements during the workshop.

Before you build (if you are being practical), check Onrez and SLExchange to make sure you are not reinventing the wheel unnecessarily. You may find what you're looking for @ little to no cost!

You should not ignore the fact that you can also "build" on your avatar (or "terraform" your land) as well! This becomes important when you want to make role plays more authentic, when you want to focus on teaching clothing, accessories, etc. More on this below.

This section of the workshop consist of three segments:

1. Basic Building Tutorial

2.  Recreation of a piece of "art"

3.  Texturing by the numbers

An overview of the SL building process

Video tutorials about the SL building process.

  • You can either click on the videos to play them, or follow the links to bring up the youtube pages.

What is a prim? The is the most basic building block (literally...but virtually!) of Second Life.

What does Rez mean?

Basic camera controls. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to get the view/angle you want when you are building in SL. These camera control tips will help you focus on exactly what you need!

Editing tools. If you create something in Second Life and want to change it, you need these tools.

Using the building grid. This is a very helpful tool when building since it allows you to move objects quickly and precisely.

Linking prims. Once you create something in Second Life you'll probably have a number of objects that you used. However, they are all "loose." Linking is the process of "sticking" them all together!

Editing appearance ("building" your avatar) can be done to some extent quite easily in SL, as we saw in the "Orientation" section. (See http://secondlife.com/app/help/avatar/appearancemode.php for details) You can also use third-party applicaitons like Gimp or Photoshop with these templates to create very nice clothes and import them into SL. /here is a very simple example of how to create a T-Shirt using GIMP:
